  3.     DIED. Prince Franz Josef II of Liechtenstein, 83, monarch of
  4. the 62-sq.-mi. principality for 51 years; in Grabs, Switzerland.
  5. The twelfth ruler of Liechtenstein and a nephew of Austrian
  6. Archduke Franz Ferdinand, whose assassination in 1914 triggered
  7. World War I, he was the first Prince to take up permanent residence
  8. in the principality. He directed a modernization that transformed
  9. Liechtenstein from an underdeveloped rural community into one of
  10. Europe's richest enclaves. He is succeeded by his oldest son,
  11. Prince Hans Adam, 44.
